5 Self-Care Tips for Nurses After an 8 or 12-Hour Shift

Self-Care Tips for Nurses After an 8 or 12-Hour Shift

Working an 8 or 12-hour shift as a nurse can be physically and emotionally exhausting. After hours of caring for patients, staying on your feet, and managing constant demands, it’s important to take time to care for yourself too. Self-care isn’t a luxury for nurses—it’s a necessity.

Here are a few simple ways nurses can recharge after a long shift.

1. Hydrate and Nourish Your Body

After a long shift, your body needs hydration and proper nutrition. Many nurses realize at the end of the day that they barely had time to drink water or eat a proper meal.

Try to drink a full glass of water when you get home and have a light, nourishing meal or snack. Your body will thank you for it.

2. Create a Relaxing Wind-Down Routine

Transitioning from a busy hospital environment to home life can be challenging. Creating a small routine can help signal to your body that it’s time to relax.

Some nurses find comfort in:

  • Taking a warm shower

  • Changing into comfortable clothes

  • Sitting down with a warm cup of coffee or tea

A simple quiet moment can make a big difference in helping your mind slow down.

3. Stretch and Release Tension

After hours of standing and moving, your muscles may feel tight and sore. Gentle stretching for even five minutes can help relieve tension in your back, legs, and shoulders.

Many nurses find stretching before bed helps improve sleep and reduce stiffness the next day.

4. Protect Your Sleep

Quality sleep is one of the most important forms of self-care for nurses. Try to create a restful environment by keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.

Avoid scrolling on your phone right before bed if possible, and allow your body time to fully relax.

5. Enjoy a Small Moment Just for You

Sometimes self-care can be as simple as taking a moment to sit quietly with something you enjoy.

For many nurses, that moment might be a comforting cup of coffee or tea before winding down. That idea is actually what inspired Nurses Brew — my nurse-owned coffee and tea brand created for the hardworking healthcare community.

After caring for everyone else all day, nurses deserve something special too.

Caring for the Caregivers

Nurses spend their shifts caring for patients, families, and coworkers. Taking a few moments to care for yourself after a long shift helps you recharge so you can continue doing the incredible work you do.

Whether it’s rest, a quiet moment, or a warm cup of coffee, remember that your well-being matters too.
